Terms of Use
Last updated: April 21, 2026
These Terms of Use ("Terms") are a legal agreement between you and the team behind Tab ("Tab," "we," "us," or "our") covering your use of the Tab mobile app and the website at hellotab.app (together, the "Service"). Please read them carefully.
If you have questions about these Terms, email legal@hellotab.app.
1. Acceptance of Terms
By creating an account, signing in, or using the Service, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy at https://hellotab.app/privacy. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
If you use the Service on behalf of an organization, you confirm that you have authority to bind that organization to these Terms, and "you" refers to both you and the organization.
2. Description of Service
Tab is a bill-splitting app. It helps you:
- Track shared expenses with friends, roommates, and travel companions.
- Split costs evenly, by share, by percentage, or by itemized assignment.
- Scan paper and digital receipts with on-device or cloud AI.
- See balances across multiple currencies.
- Record settlements when someone pays someone back.
Tab is a record-keeping tool. Tab does not move money, hold money, or process payments between you and the people in your groups. When you mark a settlement as paid, Tab updates the record; it does not transfer funds. If you need to actually pay someone, use your bank, PayPal, Venmo, Interac e-Transfer, or another payment service.
We may add, change, or remove features at any time. We will try to give reasonable notice for changes that materially reduce functionality.
3. Eligibility
You must be at least 13 years old to use Tab. If you are under the age of majority in your jurisdiction (usually 18), you may only use Tab with the involvement of a parent or guardian who agrees to these Terms on your behalf.
You must not be barred from using the Service under the laws of Canada, the United States, or any other country where you reside.
4. User Accounts
Creating an account
You can create a Tab account using:
- Sign in with Apple,
- Sign in with Google, or
- An email address and password.
You must provide accurate information, and you must keep your login credentials secret. You are responsible for everything that happens under your account. If you think someone else has accessed your account, change your password (or revoke Apple or Google sign-in access) and email support@hellotab.app.
Your display name and photo
Other people in your groups will see your display name and avatar. Do not use a display name or photo that impersonates someone else, violates a trademark, or is obscene. We may ask you to change it.
Ending your account
You can delete your account from Profile in the app or by emailing support@hellotab.app. We may suspend or terminate your account if you break these Terms, if we are required to by law, or if your account is inactive for a very long period. If we terminate your account for violating these Terms, we will try to let you export your data first unless doing so would be harmful or illegal.
After termination, your expense records in shared groups may remain visible to other members so their balances stay consistent, but your personal profile and email will be removed or anonymized.
5. Acceptable Use
When you use Tab, you agree not to:
- Use the Service for anything illegal or to help someone else break the law.
- Harass, threaten, or defame other users.
- Upload content you do not have the right to upload (including receipts that belong to someone who has not consented to your sharing them).
- Upload malware, viruses, or harmful code.
- Scrape, crawl, or mass-download data from the Service.
- Reverse-engineer, decompile, or disassemble the app except to the extent this restriction is prohibited by applicable law.
- Circumvent the monthly cloud scan limit, quota enforcement, or Tab Pro paywall — for example by using multiple accounts to get more free scans, or by calling our Cloud Functions directly from outside the app.
- Use the Service to send spam or unsolicited messages to other users.
- Use automated scripts or bots to create accounts, post expenses, or interact with the API in ways that are not part of normal app usage.
- Resell the Service, sublicense it, or offer it as a service to others without our written permission.
We can remove content, suspend accounts, or terminate accounts that violate these rules.
6. User Content
"User Content" means anything you create or upload through Tab: expense descriptions, group names, comments, receipt images, line items, settlement notes, display names, and profile photos.
You own your content
You keep all rights to your User Content.
You give us a license to operate the Service
To run Tab, we need a limited license. You grant Tab a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, reproduce, display, modify (for example, to create image thumbnails), and transmit your User Content only as needed to provide the Service to you and the people you share groups with. This license ends when you delete the content or your account, except for copies we are required to keep for legal or backup reasons for a reasonable period.
You are responsible for your content
You confirm that you have the right to upload the content you upload and that it does not violate anyone else's rights or any law. If someone tells us your content infringes their copyright, we may remove it. We handle copyright complaints under the Copyright Act of Canada and, where applicable, the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Send copyright notices to legal@hellotab.app.
We do not review everything
Tab does not pre-screen User Content. If you see content on the Service that violates these Terms, email support@hellotab.app and we will take a look.
7. Subscriptions and Purchases
Tab Pro (planned)
Tab Pro is a paid subscription we are planning to launch. When it is live, it will give you:
- Unlimited cloud receipt scans (the free tier includes five cloud scans per month).
- Export to CSV.
- Additional analytics.
- Recurring expense automation.
The expected price at launch is $2.99 USD per month (or a discounted annual plan). Pricing may change before launch; the price inside the app at the time you subscribe is the price that applies.
How purchases work
Tab Pro is sold through Apple's In-App Purchase system using StoreKit. When you subscribe:
- Your payment is processed by Apple, not by us. Your credit card information stays with Apple.
- Your subscription automatically renews at the end of each billing period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before renewal.
- Your Apple ID is charged at confirmation of purchase and at each renewal.
- You can manage or cancel your subscription at any time in Settings > Apple ID > Subscriptions on your iPhone.
- Deleting the Tab app does not cancel your subscription. You must cancel through the App Store.
Apple's standard subscription terms apply in addition to these Terms. You can read them at https://www.apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/.
Refunds
Refunds for App Store purchases are handled by Apple under their refund policy. Tab cannot directly refund an App Store purchase.
Free tier limits
The free tier includes five cloud AI receipt scans per month, reset on the first of each calendar month. On-device scanning and manual entry are unlimited and free. We may change the specific free-tier limits and will tell you inside the app before reducing them.
8. Receipt Scanning and AI Processing
Tab's receipt scanning feature can run in two places:
- On your device. On iPhones running iOS 26 or newer, Tab uses Apple's Foundation Models to read the receipt locally. The image does not leave your phone.
- In the cloud. On older devices, or when you tap "Scan with AI," Tab uploads the receipt image to our Cloud Function, which sends it to Anthropic's Claude Haiku model for parsing. Claude returns structured line-item data. See the Privacy Policy for details on what is sent, and why.
Receipt parsing is not perfect. The amounts, items, tax, and tip that the AI returns may be wrong. Always double-check before saving the expense. You are responsible for the accuracy of the expenses you record.
Do not upload a receipt that contains someone else's sensitive information (for example, a full credit-card number or a medical item list) unless they have agreed.
9. Disclaimers
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that:
- The Service will be uninterrupted, secure, or error-free.
- Balances, receipt scans, or currency conversions will always be accurate.
- Data you save will never be lost.
- The AI scanning feature will correctly identify items, totals, tax, or tip.
Tab is not a bank, payment processor, money transmitter, or financial advisor. Any decision you make based on the data in Tab — including who owes whom, how much to pay, or whether to settle in a particular currency — is your decision. Confirm important amounts against your bank statements and original receipts.
10. Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent allowed by law:
- Tab and its team are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, revenue, data, or goodwill, even if we have been advised of the possibility of those damages.
- Our total liability to you for any claim arising out of the Service is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you paid Tab in the twelve months before the claim arose, or (b) one hundred Canadian dollars (CAD $100).
Some jurisdictions do not allow these limitations. In those jurisdictions, our liability is limited to the smallest amount permitted by law.
Nothing in these Terms limits liability for fraud, gross negligence, or anything else that cannot be limited by law.
11. Indemnification
You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Tab and its team from any claim, loss, damage, or expense (including reasonable legal fees) that arises from:
- Your use of the Service,
- Your User Content,
- Your violation of these Terms, or
- Your violation of someone else's rights.
We will tell you promptly about any claim we think is covered by this section and will let you control the defence of it, as long as you defend it in good faith and do not settle it in a way that harms us.
12. Governing Law and Jurisdiction
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada that apply there, without regard to conflict-of-law rules.
You agree that the courts located in Toronto, Ontario have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising out of these Terms or the Service, and you consent to the personal jurisdiction of those courts. If you are a consumer, this clause does not deprive you of any mandatory consumer-protection rights in your home country.
Before starting a lawsuit, please email legal@hellotab.app so we can try to sort the issue out.
13. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we make a material change, we will update the "Last updated" date above and show a notice inside the app the next time you open it. If you keep using the Service after the change takes effect, you accept the new Terms. If you do not accept them, stop using the Service and delete your account.
14. Miscellaneous
- Entire agreement. These Terms and the Privacy Policy are the entire agreement between you and Tab about the Service.
- Severability. If a part of these Terms is held unenforceable, the rest stays in effect.
- No waiver. If we do not enforce a part of these Terms right away, we have not given up the right to enforce it later.
- Assignment. You cannot assign these Terms to anyone else without our written permission. We can assign them to a successor company (for example, in a sale or merger).
- Third parties. These Terms do not give anyone other than you and Tab any rights.
- Language. These Terms are written in English. If they are translated into another language, the English version controls in the event of a conflict.
